Technische Universität Berlin – Centre for Technology and Society (TUB)

The Centre for Technology and Society, founded in 1995 as a central research institution of the TUB, investigates the interaction between technical and societal development. Within its thematic area of expertise, ‘Security – Risk – Privacy’, the main focus of analysis is on social, political, organisational and technological developments that influence and shape both the societal perception of security and risk as well as new technologies. TUB coordinates the FORTRESS project and leads Work Package (WP) 4 on system analyses.

Trilateral Research Ltd (TRI)

Trilateral Research Ltd specialises in research and the provision of strategic, policy and regulatory advice on new technologies, privacy, risk, surveillance and security issues and effective stakeholder engagement strategies. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, TRI leads WP 3 “Reconstruction of crises and crises decision processes” and WP 9 “Dissemination”.

Treelogic, Telemática y Lógica Racional para la Empresa Europea S.L. (TREE)

TREE is a company specialised in Information and Communication Technologies. Cooperative research and development is the company hallmark, and the key to the business model followed by TREE. This research assesses the maturity and potential of emerging technologies. Big Data, Data Science, Cloud Computing, Computer Vision, Social Media Analysis, and Terahertz technologies are the key technology programmes in the company. Safety and Emergency Management, Healthcare, Transport, and Financial Services are some of the most relevant business domains. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, TREE leads WP 6 “Modelling Cascading effects”.

Electricité de France (EDF)

Electric utility EDF is represented in the FORTRESS project through a department of its research and development branch. This department addresses the technical, organisational, human, and environmental aspects of industrial risk management. It focuses on defining risk reduction and mitigation barriers. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, EDF will use its expertise especially to contribute to WP 4 “System analyses”.

Dialogik -Non-profit institute for communication and cooperation research (DIA)

Founded in 2003, DIA conducts systematic research into communication processes and interactions between politics, economy and civil society, and analyses the various forms, instruments, effects and potentials of communication and cooperation at various levels. It has special expertise in social scientific approaches and in novel methods and advanced techniques of qualitative and quantitative social research. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, DIA leads WP 5 “Behavioural analysis: activities, communication and decision points”.

Vienna Centre for Societal Security (VICESSE)

The Vienna Centre for Societal Security (VICESSE) is a private non-profit research and consulting organisation, focussing on the analysis of a wide array of security issues in a broader societal context. Locating security problems and proposed solutions emerging at local, national and European levels in wider social and historical contexts VICESSE operates at the interface between science, technology, law and policy. Conceiving of security as a societal concept VICESSE strives to integrate and combine different analytical perspectives into a complex framework providing the basis for rigorous empirical and theoretical academic studies and pragmatic policy solutions alike.

The VICESSE mission statement is to bring security back into society. This entails a dual task: linking contemporary security solutions to the everyday world of citizens and giving members of society a critical voice in security research.

Within FORTRESS, VICESSE will be involved in examining dependencies and resilient factors in WP2 and the historical case studies in WP 3.

Ritchey Consulting AB (RCAB)

RCAB is a private company working with general morphological analysis (GMA) for problem structuring and decision support modelling. GMA is a method for structuring and investigating the total set of relationships contained in multi-dimensional, non-quantifiable, problem complexes. It is used for modelling complex social, technical and policy driven problem areas. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, RCAB will lead WP 1 “Problem structuring and conceptual model”.

University College London (UCL)

UCL’s Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (UCL-IRDR) was founded in 2010 and is an interdisciplinary research and teaching unit with a focus on vulnerability, risk, disasters and resilience with respect to natural and anthropogenic hazards. The IRDR contains the Aon Benfield Hazard Research Centre, which provides courses and research on natural hazards and answers the needs of the reinsurance industry for hazard-related information. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, UCL leads WP 2 “Balancing vulnerability & resilience”.

Istituto Superiore sui Sistemi Territoriali per l’Innovazione (SiTi)

SiTI LOGO Ufficiale

SiTI (Higher Institute on Territorial Systems for Innovation) was created in 2002 by the Politecnico di Torino and Compagnia di San Paolo. Its research activities are focused on three main thematic areas: security and energy, environmental heritage and urban redevelopment, and logistics and transport. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, SiTi uses its expertise particularly to contribute to WP 4 “System analyses” and WP 5 “Behavioural analysis: activities, communication and decision points”.

Instituut Fysieke Veiligheid – Institute for Physical Safety (IFV)

IFV (Institute for Physical Safety) is the umbrella organisation for 25 Dutch safety regions. It contributes to a safer society by supporting the work of the safety regions and their partners. It’s focus areas are health care, crisis management, ICT and Information management, R&D and international research. IFV is governed by the Council of Commanders and the national security council, which consists of 25 Mayors. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, VRK leads WP 8 “Field tests and trainings”.

Service Départemental d’Incendie et de Secours des Alpes de Haute-Provence (SDIS 04)

SDIS 04 (Departmental Services of Fire and Rescue) is one of the departmental sub-structures of France’s Direction de la Sécurité Civile, is the central structure responsible for the management of risks, catastrophic events and major incidents. On a local level, SDIS 04 deals with disaster prevention and response. Rescue operations account for a large part of its work. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, SDIS 04 uses their expertise especially to contribute to WP 4 “System analyses” and WP 5 “Behavioural analysis: activities, communication and decision points”.

Berliner Wasserbetriebe (BWB)

BWB is the largest company in the field of water supply and wastewater treatment in Germany. It provides excellent drinking water for 3.7 million people in Berlin. It is also responsible for the sustainable treatment of wastewater in Berlin and the surrounding regions, as well as it operates surface water treatment plants and storm water facilities. Within FORTRESS, in addition to other tasks, BWB mainly contributes to WP 4 “System analyses”.
