The holidays are nigh, and year is coming to an end. We would like to take a moment to update you on what we have done since the start of FORTRESS, as well as some of our plans for the coming year.

FORTRESS started on April 1 2014 (and no, we are not joking). Shortly after the start of our project we launched the website and created a Twitter account. Both are used to provide updates on what we do, and we encourage all who are interested in the project’s activities to follow us on Twitter and regularly visit our website.

Since the start of the project we have completed and submitted several reports to the European Commission for review. These vary from reports on resilience and vulnerability in systems experiencing disaster, to case studies of past crisis events, methodological approaches, and decision support and modelling tools. All publicly available reports produced to date can be found on the Research page of our website.

We have attended and presented at several public events, such as the Annual Conference of UCL’s Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction, the ‘Emergency Services: Themes in Planning, Response and Recovery’ conference at Nottingham Trent University, and the Society of Risk Analysis Annual Meeting and Conference. Additionally, we have organised several meetings and events. The first one being the project’s Kick-off meeting in Berlin in May 2014, and several workshops on General Morphological Analysis at different locations across Europe, as well as general project meetings. An overview of all events we participated in in 2014 can be found in the Past Events section of our website.

2015 will bring a full year of FORTRESS reports and meetings. To give a brief idea of what can be expected in the New Year, we have listed a few upcoming events and reports below:

starFebruary 2015: early into the New Year several reports are due. We expect to have a report on gap analysis between vulnerability and resilience ready by the end of February, as well as a report on interrelationships between crisis managers.

starApril 2015: Workshop with emergency managers on nine crisis case studies analysed in FORTRESS. London, UK. Exact date to be confirmed.

starMay 2015: First responders workshop. The Netherlands. Exact date to be confirmed.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The FORTRESS consortium.
